Danubio Gemicene Mozambican Aged 25. Single. Fourth Year Student Danubio comes from Inhambane, the province to the south of Beira. He is the youngest of a family of 16. His father was a nurse, now retired. The first year of his course was paid for by his uncle, with additional support from his brothers, but this source of funding has dried up. He has managed to obtain a scholarship which just about covers his expenses. He lives in a very small house in the ‘village’ (25,000 people in an area the size of Christchurch Park) close to the Medical School. The house does have electric light (though it is very expensive) but no running water. He is finding the course difficult but so far has passed all his exams. In addition, however, he acts as a volunteer for an AIDS charity which provides food for those in the ‘village’. He hopes to return to Inhambane to work when he qualifies.
