Elmano’s home is in Nampula. When he left school he was unable to find work but after three years managed to get on to a training course and qualified as a Medical Technician. Some local friends supported his application to the Medical School and his fees were paid for the first year. He subsequently got a local scholarship. This however only covered his tuition fees.

In order to keep himself he works two 12-hour shifts in a private medical clinic as a technician. Despite this, and although he describes difficulties with the original Problem Based Learning course, he has passed all his exams with ease.

He qualified in 2007 and is now working in Internal Medicine at the Central Hospital.
